Most of the students finish their matriculations by the time of graduation. Those that need extra time and guidance are encouraged to finish soon after their army/National Service duty. There is even a "Graduates'Apartment" and a social worker on hand to encourage the girls to return to Dolev and finish their matriculations and continue in an academic field, usually teaching or social work -read more about the graduates home.
For example, Ora, a graduate of 10 years ago, relates: "I could never even think about a university education without the help and encouragement given to me by the staff at Ulpanat Dolev."
Ora finished the Ulpana three years ago with excellent grades. Thanks to the Ulpana staff who encouraged and helped her get accepted into Bar Ilan University, Ora is now finishing her first year of studies toward a B.A. in social sciences. She has come a long way from her difficult high school years before she arrived at the Ulpana in the 11th grade and "owes her success to the Ulpana staff who guided her in the right direction".
Shoshana, (not her real name) another example, had a very difficult time as a teenager. Her parents turned religious and she had a trying time complying with this new way of life. After many trials and tribulations, she agreed to try the Ulpana in the 10th grade. Her first year was "challenging" but she finally realized that the staff and students were interested in her and her success in studies and in general.
“Before I came to the Ulpana,” says Shoshana, “I felt like I was living on the edge. Here, they’ve helped me acquire the self-esteem that saves me from hanging out with the wrong crowd. Besides,” she adds “out here, there is nowhere to go with the wrong crowd, anyway!”
She also claims that "the Ulpana made a serious difference in my life and the direction I have taken as a self-confident young adult."
She chose to work with mentally retarded children after the Ulpana as part of her National Service duty. She studied communications at the Ulpana and is continuing towards a degree in that field at a nearby community college. She is now married and expecting her first child this summer.
The combination of the education received at the Ulpana and the nurturing of the dedicated staff and the hosting families in Dolev have greatly benefitted these lucky young women to persevere their future, despite the hardships they had to face as adolescents.
